SLA/EL Teacher - Summer Learning Academy

The Newport Summer Learning Academy (SLA) will provide an in-person, 6 week literacy focused program intended to mitigate summer learning loss for Newport Public Schools rising Kindergarten - 5th grade students. SLA is part of the Reading Reaps Rewards (R3) Initiative which is a collective of summer programs across Newport that provide literacy skill building as part of their camps. SLA works in partnership with Newport Public Schools (NPS) to provide access to high-quality summer programming for students who need help making academic gains, multilingual students, and our differently-abled students.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide in-person instruction to a classroom of 15-18 students who have been grouped together intentionally based on age, grade, academic testing performance, and English language proficiency.
  • Plan daily high-interest, experiential lessons that engage students with literacy and numeracy in a meaningful way. Lessons should get students moving, take them outside the classroom, and have hands-on/minds-on components.
  • Incorporate small group work and opportunities for independent practice and inquiry-based learning. Time will be spent ensuring that all students are tracking and building skills and meeting the learning objectives set for the summer.
  • Utilize the Growing Up Wild curriculum to support the theme of the summer program.
  • Conduct pre and post assessments of students as a requirement of the Summer Learning Initiative using SAYO-Y (Survey of Academic and Youth Outcomes-Youth Survey)

Qualifications:

  • All teachers must be certified, elementary certification preferred.
  • EL Teachers must also have an active EL certification.
  • SLA and EL Teachers will need to be comfortable with open ended activities and changing planned activities based on student interest and ability.

Schedule: Throughout May/June: Approximately 8 hours of required training to be held prior to program start

Program Weeks: 6 weeks - July 8th to August 16th, 2024 (please note we WILL be open on Victory Day Aug 12)

Shift: Monday – Thursday from 8:30-11:30 am (possible Friday hours for one or more weeks), plus:

  • 30 minutes of Common Planning time weekly with other teachers
  • 15-20 hours of planning time (to be used as needed before and during SLA)
